The Owners of the Davis Mercantile Receive the Will Koch Indiana Tourism Leadership Award; Indiana State Festivals Association Coordinator Receives Visit Indiana Leadership Award

12 Receive Hoosier Hospitality Awards

The Indiana Destination Development Corporation (IDDC) announced today at the Indianapolis Zoo that, the owners of  Davis Mercantile, the Miller Family, are this year's recipients of the Will Koch Indiana Tourism Leadership Award. Doug Weisheit, Indiana State Festivals Association Coordinator, is this year's recipient of the Visit Indiana Leadership Award.

The Indiana Destination Development Corporation (IDDC) announced at the Indianapolis Zoo that Alvin and Elsie Miller, owners of the Davis Mercantile in Shipshewana, are this year's recipients of the Will Koch Indiana Tourism Leadership Award.

With a vision for a multi-complex retail space, Alvis and Elsie Miller purchased the Old Davis Hotel in the 1980s. With a dream in hand, ideas turned into reality as construction began on what is now called the “Davis Mercantile,” expanding into several businesses. On Feb. 28, 2004, a fire broke out and burned down the Davis Mercantile along with a block of several businesses in Shipshewana. With so much history and investment lost, the Millers were unsure what to do. Letters of support soon began to pour in from all over the world, and the Millers knew what they had to do - rebuild. With the help of the local Amish community, the Millers were able to rebuild, expand, and make their dreams come true, even with an indoor carousel on the third floor. Today, the Davis Mercantile houses over 20 unique stores ranging from quilt makers to toy stores, along with food and entertainment. Shipshewana and the Davis Mercantile welcome over 2 million visitors annually.

“It’s an incredible honor to receive this prestigious award,” said Alvin and Elsie Miller, founders of the Davis Mercantile. “We are truly humbled and grateful to everyone who has supported us along the way.”

The Will Koch Indiana Tourism Leadership Award is presented annually and is the highest tourism honor given by the state. The award is named for the late Will Koch, long-time owner and president of Holiday World & Splashin' Safari.

Visit Indiana, and the Koch family established the award to pay tribute to Will. He was a visionary leader with a deep passion for Indiana and our travel, tourism, and hospitality industry.

“Like Will, Alvin and Elsie Miller are true entrepreneurs who strengthen and enrich the tourism industry,” said Amy Howell, IDDC Interim CEO. “They have helped shape the Shipshewana community with an asset like the Davis Mercantile.”

"The Miller family has been instrumental in making the Davis Mercantile and Shipshewana a place for everyone to come and be treated like family," said Sonya Nash, Executive Director of Shipshewana/LaGrange County Convention & Visitors Bureau (LCCVB).

Nominations for the Will Koch Indiana Tourism Leadership Award are submitted by community leaders and members of Indiana's travel, tourism, and hospitality industry. A panel reviews submissions.

Amy Howell presented Doug Weisheit, Indiana State Festivals Association (ISFA) Coordinator and ISFA1 Driver, with the Visit Indiana Leadership Award.

For over 30 years, Doug has been a visionary, a leader, and an advocate for tourism in Indiana. One of Doug’s most outstanding achievements has been his transformational leadership of the Indiana State Festivals Association (ISFA).

During Doug’s tenure, ISFA has flourished as Indiana’s largest festivals and events membership organization. Because of his leadership, the Indiana Festival Guide features nearly 600 festivals and events. He currently serves as the ISFA Coordinator and ISFA1 Driver. In addition to serving the ISFA, he is also a member of Parke County Convention & Visitors Commission and Boone County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Inc. His personal dedication reflects the award’s emphasis on leadership and pioneering promotional initiatives.

John "Bobby" Bonus HHA Award Winner 2025

John Bobby Bonus - The Bradley Hotel

Bobby embodies Hoosier Hospitality through his work ethic, drive for excellence, and genuine care for every guest. Since The Bradley opened in 2021, Bobby has had a hand in every part of the hotel—from valet and housekeeping to events and even stepping in as Acting Director of Food & Beverage and General Manager during a leadership gap. His friendly, welcoming nature makes him the face of this wonderful hotel and often the first interaction guests experience. He takes time to get to know our regular guests, greeting them by name and ensuring they always leave with a smile.  Bobby’s nominator shared the following story regarding his outstanding contributions to welcoming visitors.

The outsourced laundry service often returned linens below hotel standards. Rather than compromising on quality, Bobby personally ensured guests had the best experience possible. After working a full day to make sure guest needs were met, Bobby would catch a few hours of sleep, then meet up with some dedicated team members at the laundromat at 2 am. There were times when they would spend all night washing, drying, steaming, and folding linen for guests the next day. Watching the sun come up and knowing they had to get these sheets to housekeepers so guest rooms would be ready on time.

These exhausting nights highlighted his dedication and refusal to let service standards slip.  During one busy week, a shipment of linens never arrived. Without hesitation, Bobby drove from Fort Wayne to Indianapolis and back to pick up the missing sheets. He returned to the hotel, rolled up his sleeves, and worked side-by-side with the team making beds to ensure every guest had a room ready upon arrival. It is these behind-the-scenes efforts that showcase Hoosier Hospitality.
And why John Bobby Bonus is an award winner today.
