Batter up! There’s a new home team to root for in Richmond.
Part of the 26-team summer collegiate Northwoods League, the Flying Mummies launched their inaugural 2026 season in May at Richmond’s storied Don McBride Stadium. (Locals of a certain age will fondly remember the ballpark as the site of many Optimist League youth baseball and volleyball games.)
The team’s quirky name references two of Richmond’s most notable features – a pair of authentic Egyptian mummies on display at the Wayne County Historical Museum and the Joseph Moore Museum of Natural History on the Earlham College campus, and the fact that the Wright Brothers lived here for a short period back in the 1880s.
An even more interesting and random bit of trivia, the team is owned by a trio of Hollywood celebrities. Jon Heder, Jon Gries and Efren Ramirez starred in Napoleon Dynamite back in 2004, recently joining forces to invest in the Richmond Flying Mummies. On June 10, the trio collaborated with the Richmond Art Museum for a special appearance that included a film screening followed by a live audience Q&A, autograph session and Flying Mummies game that night.
