Looking for some fun, easy outdoor recreation this summer? Head to Hamilton County and hop on a rail bike for a one-of-a-kind Indiana adventure.
Now in their third season of use, Noblesville-based Nickel Plate Heritage Railroad rail bikes join an already popular schedule of themed Nickel Plate Express train ride outings. Imagine pedal boats that run on railroad tracks instead of water, and you get the idea. Manufactured by Pennsylvania-based Rail Gliders, the four-seater “bikes” actually look more like carts of buggies, powered by the seated passengers.
Customers can choose from three different rides departing from the Hobbs Station depot in Forest Park — the White River Family Cruise with a layover at Noblesville’s charming town square, a Twilight Rail Ride with a pit stop for firepits and s’mores, or the 7-mile roundtrip Forest Park Rail Adventure. All of the options allow participants to pedal at their own pace through idyllic Indiana farmland and wooded landscapes; bird and wildlife sightings are to be expected.
With 14 bikes in the fleet, the Nickel Plate team can accommodate groups of up to 48 riders per journey. Appropriate for all ages, the vehicles are fairly easy to pedal, but be forewarned — it is a bit of a workout for your leg muscles, even for more experienced bikers.
