If you’re an antique car buff, get your motor running over to Wayne County to check out the only facility of its kind dedicated exclusively to the iconic Model T Ford.
Located in the Historic Depot District, the Model T Museum spans two separate buildings with more than 40 different vehicles from the permanent collection and on loan to admire. If these wheels could talk, they’d tell tales of the legendary Detroit-based manufacturer’s production heyday that ran from 1908 until 1927. Cars on display cover the full scope of the Model T’s many applications, from the Tin Lizzie, ambulances, fire trucks, and delivery vehicles to touring cars, speedsters, and runabouts.
A short film in the theater room traces the history of the iconic brand and offers insight into the cars visitors get to see in the on-site showrooms. The museum also houses a functioning Model T machine shop, a vintage garage, lots of artifacts, and memorabilia—even an early Pietenpol Sky Scout airplane powered by a Model T engine.
On the way out, explore the nicely stocked gift shop for books, merchandise, and souvenirs to commemorate your visit.
The first weekend each June, the Model T Ford Club of America convenes in Richmond for an annual (open to the public) homecoming event that includes breakfasts, a swap meet, seminars, demonstrations, and a popular car show. The museum, meanwhile, stays open for individual visits, group tours, and field trips all year long.
