As Indiana’s third largest natural lake, Bass Lake, located near Knox, is a big draw for families in the summer. It’s a place I’ve gone to since I was in my teens to visit friends at their lake houses over the years and a place where I feel my troubles fade away as soon as I set eyes on the water. It’s a great getaway for me that isn’t far from home.
If you don’t know someone to hang with on the lake, The Lakehouse & Cabana is a perfect rental spot to spend some time taking in the lake breeze, throwing a pole in the water, or just swaying in a hammock. It’s big enough to accommodate a girls or guys getaway group, a large family trip, or a multi-generational vacation.
With four bedrooms and two baths, it can sleep up to 10—or more if there are young children in portable cribs or on air mattresses. Two rooms have king beds, one has a twin, and another has a double bunk with a trundle, so two doubles and one twin. It’s ideal for an extended family gathering where all the little cousins can bunk together and have the best time.
From the road, you can’t tell what an oasis it is. It’s once you enter the house and turn down the hallway that you get a glimpse through the glass double doors and windows of not just the lake but the long yard on the property that extends down to the dock and a fishing cove brimming with lily pads.
Besides a covered patio just outside the back door, there are three additional seating areas as you move along the property—one that sits next to the fishing cove, another outside the cabana, and another surrounding a fire pit a few steps from the water beside a hammock that is calling your name.
The place is super cozy, well-stocked with snacks and some makings of a light meal, and has all the necessities of home. It’s a place that’s comfortable, where you won’t have to make multiple runs to a gas station or convenience store for things you forgot.
The cabana at the back of the property is the ultimate summer hangout. Once a bait shop, the shed has been converted into the perfect party place—and with a cool touch of exposed WWII era ammunition containers that were used to construct it. With wide glass double doors that open toward the water, comfy seating, a large-screen television, a fridge (and freezer stocked with popsicles), a foosball table, and karaoke, it will feel like a summer that you never want to end.
The garage is another inviting party space stocked with floats, a TV, games, and lots of comfy seating. You’ll find some fishing poles in the cabana for even more memories to be made.
