As a lifelong Midwest traveler and mom who has spent countless chilly evenings exploring Indiana’s parks with my daughter, I know how magical winter getaways can be. In this guide, I’m sharing six Indiana State Parks offering dazzling holiday lights, drive-through campground displays, and festive family traditions to brighten your season.

Highlights

  • Get the exact event schedules, gate hours, and vehicle fees ranging from freewill donations to affordable $10 entry options.

  • Find practical logistical tips on which parks require exact cash or checks versus those equipped to accept credit cards.

  • Discover how your seasonal admission dollars directly support local volunteer efforts and the Friends of Indiana State Parks network.

Lieber State Recreation Area (Lieber Winter Lights)

Back to Top of List

Tucked away in Cloverdale near Cagles Mill Lake, the Lieber Winter Lights celebration runs the first two weekends of December (December 4–6 and December 11–13, 2026) from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Load up the car and wind your way through a festive drive-through display looping right through the park and campground. Freewill donations are warmly welcomed at the gate to support ongoing park projects.

Visit Indiana Tip: Because Lieber’s Winter Lights celebration only runs for the first two weekends of December, opening weekend can draw quite a crowd. If you want a smoother, shorter wait at the gate, aim for Sunday evening or arrive right at 6:00 p.m. when the lights first flick on.

Mounds State Park (Nights of Lights)

Back to Top of List

Over in Anderson, Mounds State Park hosts its popular Nights of Lights every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from November 27 through December 27, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. You'll cruise past more than 60 illuminated displays scattered throughout the campground and decorated historic buildings. Admission is $10 per vehicle, and thankfully, both cash and credit cards are accepted at the gate.

Visit Indiana Tip: Unlike many state park holiday events that strictly require cash or checks, Mounds State Park happily takes credit cards at the gate for their $10 Nights of Lights entry. Still, it’s always smart to keep a few dollar bills tucked in your glove box for cash-only pop-up treats or donations elsewhere!

Ouabache State Park (Wonderland of Lights)

Back to Top of List

If you want a classic local tradition, head up to Bluffton for Ouabache State Park's 11th annual Wonderland of Lights. Running nightly from December 6 through December 31, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., this campground display features over 40 dazzling setups capped off by a synchronized music and light show at the historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) fire tower. Admission is just $5 per vehicle (cash or check only).

Visit Indiana Tip: Don't just drive through the campground at Ouabache—make sure you pull over near the historic CCC fire tower to catch their synchronized music and light show. Give yourself an extra 10–15 minutes parked nearby to let the kids watch the lights dance to the music.

Shakamak State Park (Holiday Lights & Group Camp Festivities)

Back to Top of List

Down in Jasonville, Shakamak State Park gets into the holiday spirit by decking out its historic Group Camp and surrounding facilities with glowing seasonal lights. Keep an eye out for special family-friendly happenings like their popular Breakfast with Santa event early in December, with all proceeds directly benefiting the Shakamak Friends group.

Spring Mill State Park (Holiday in the Village & Campground Lights)

Back to Top of List

Mitchell's Spring Mill State Park pairs its beloved Holiday in the Village weekend with a charming drive-through light display right in the campground, happening December 4–5, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:45 p.m. It's an interactive experience where visitors can cast votes for their favorite decorated campsite—the winning camper takes home a free two-night stay at the park. Admission is $5 (cash only).

Visit Indiana Tip: Spring Mill’s drive-through lights only run for a single weekend in early December (coinciding with Holiday in the Village). Plan to arrive late afternoon to explore the historic pioneer village first, grab some dinner, and then hop back in the car to cruise through the campground light display as night falls.

Starve Hollow State Recreation Area (Christmas in the Campground)

Back to Top of List

Over in Vallonia, Starve Hollow State Recreation Area hosts its cozy Christmas in the Campground on Saturday, December 12, 2026, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. It’s a wonderful evening featuring a drive-through display paired with family activities inside the Forest Education Center, where you can warm up, check out seasonal crafts, and vote for their favorite campsite entries. A recommended $5 donation per car supports park improvements.

Visit Indiana Tip: While the drive-through display at Starve Hollow is wonderful, the real magic for families happens inside the Forest Education Center. Build in time to step out of the car, warm up with some hot cocoa, check out the seasonal crafts, and cast your official vote for the best-decorated campsite.
