I am always intrigued by long-standing restaurants in historic structures. So when I came across the oldest restaurant in Northeastern Indiana, I knew I’d have to check it out. St. James Restaurant is in the town of Avilla and it dates back to the late 1800s when the St. James Hotel operated a dining room in the hotel.

St. James Bar

It started as a former hotel where horses were tied up in front as travelers stopped to have a meal and lay their head. By the 1940s it had started to deteriorate, but was brought back by new owners Bill and Evelyn Freeman.Today it is a thriving eatery and features a beautiful wooden bar and some stunning stained glass.

On the menu, you’ll find one long-time favorite that has been satisfying diners for decades - the award-winning broasted chicken. They're also known for their impressive seafood options. And there are a few German-inspired recipes that harken back to its early roots.  Be sure to try the German potato salad as a side and German soups that you’ll find in the rotation. Other menu options range from ribs to prime rib to casual sandwiches. You’ll find something for anyone to enjoy.

St. James Seafood

There’s also a nice cocktail menu and I enjoyed an old-school favorite, the Grasshopper, on our visit. Whether you’re looking for something to sip at the bar or a hearty meal of comfort food, this is a cozy, historic place you’ll want to seek out the next time you’re in the northeast corner of the state.
